Human stories

(European documentary)

Jury:

  • Papp Bojána director (Hu) / film-maker (Hu)
  • Adina Bradeanu director (Ro) / film critic / researcher (Ro/UK)
  • Müllner András aesthete (Hu) / aesthetician (Hu)

"We will start by noting that the international documentary competition at Dialektus has confronted us with a wide range of documentary films which were not only displaying different levels of artistic accomplishment but have also, stylistically, made us reflect on the wide range of possibilities opened to documentary film-makers today - meaning by that what exactly we, as audiences, are ready to accept as "documentary film" today, as opposed to, say, 50 years ago.

Some of the films screened have already been extensively awarded in the past year, subsequently reaching a status of almost "canonical" works within the field of documentary film-making - we refer here to films such as Helena Trestikova's RENE and Kim Longinotto's ROUGH AUNTIES. Some others presented themselves as straightforward, at the same time entertaining and chilly stories of access to yet uncharted political contexts - the case of Linda Jablonska's WELCOME TO NORTH KOREA. Finally, some of these films introduced some wonderful, inspiring and powerful characters portrayed with compassion; characters which, although confronted with adverse conditions, did not allow themselves the luxury of self-victimisation and engaged on paths able to empower them and inspire others."

Cooking History

Cooking History

Director: Péter Kerekes, 88 min (SL)

The film is a portrait of different military cooks from all over Europe who served in various armies and have witnessed the wars of the 20th century. They take us behind the scenes of dates, facts, declarations of war, battles, and peace agreements. Cooking History shows the little secrets of these people, and opens up a dimension of history one won't find in textbooks or archives.

Evaluation of the jury:

And it was by thinking about that sense of widened possibilities within the field of documentary film-making today that we decided to give the main award of our section to a film that stood out by being dramatically different from all the others - a piece of elaborate film-making, which incorporates extensive staging and reconstruction to come up with a fresh perspective on the various bloodsheds witnessed by Europe from World War II onwards, by bringing imagination, perspective and a pinch of salt to our often didactic and linear understanding of history. The main award in the International Documentary section goes to a film that appeared to us as the most accomplished embodiment of the term "creative documentary": COOKING HISTORY, by Peter Kerekes.

Grown in Detroit: Teen Moms become Urban Farmers

Grown in Detroit: Teen Moms become Urban Farmers

Directors: Mascha Poppenk, Manfred Poppenk, 60 min (NL)

Just imagine ... . How would it be if the hometown of mass production and also one of the most polluted cities in America would turn green again? A script many environmentalists are dreaming about. Utopia? Not in Detroit!

Evaluation of the jury:

Documentary has been for decades a genre able to inspire crowds and spread hope among the disenfranchised - and in this perspective, our commendation this year goes to GROWN IN DETROIT, a documentary about a group of underage mothers or mothers-to-be at the Catherine Ferguson Academy in Detroit, who remain serene and start a small agro-business by which they redeem both themselves and their battered city.

Jury:

  • Kató Csilla anthropologist, festival director (RO)
  • Szirmai Márton director (RO)

"The jury had a very hard time while judging the films of this section because there was a huge variety of styles and approaches in these films with different levels of quality and length. There was no underlying selection criteria, so the jury had to invent the values and criteria of Deep description in these films."

The Bagyeli Pygmies at the Fringes of the World

The Bagyeli Pygmies at the Fringes of the World (Les Pygmées Bagyéli a la Lisiere du Monde)

Director: François-Philippe Gallois, 87 min (FR)

Discovering the outside world, the Bagyeli Pygmies have seen that they are considered like animals or slaves by a society dominated by farmers. And when the Exxon pipeline arrived in the Pygmie's forest aided by the World Bank, turned out that our industrial society is worse than the farmers. Through the point of view of 3 attractive Pygmies, the movie encounters the complexities of change that the real world imposes on hunter-gatherers.

Evaluation of the jury:

The jury appreciated the way in which the filmmaker recorded and presented in a complex way the life of a community which faces the threats of forced modernisation, the petrol industry, and AIDS.

Student-work

(European student films)

Jury:

  • Eva Michalková festival director (SK)
  • László Sára producer (HU)
  • Sasa Sreckovic festival director (SR)

"In the section of student works we were offered the review of diverse subjects, as well as different approaches, quality level and cinematographic instruments used by young filmmakers. What we would emphasize is that they treated very serious topics with a clear vision and professional dedication. The topics encompass the following: research on actual social processes also introducing individual life stories in various degrees (Borderliners, Superheroes); some films strongly dealing with political consequences of social changes (Beneath Everest); ethnographic accounts of selectively extensive traditional societies and their everyday routines (Gauchos, The Veil) or festivities within modern societies, yet being aware of their very roots (Doing the Norway); some of them presenting significant identity dilemmas (My father, my uncle) or the islands of sacred space and time offering so much desired sense of spiritual unity (Generation rain, Little room); some films focus on individual characters showing ordinary people on social margins in their human conditions (Hudecek and Rein); finally there are also works playing and experimenting with the various cinematographic elements (the rhythm and sound in Plastic and Glass or mise-en-scene in Little Room)."

Collecting of Mr. Hudecek and Mr. Rein (Sběr pana Hudečka a pana Reina)

Collecting of Mr. Hudecek and Mr. Rein (Sběr pana Hudečka a pana Reina)

Director: Richard KOMÁREK, 50 min (CZ)

Mr. Hudeček is a worthy murderer. Mr. Rein works at a junkyard. At the age of sixty they are just friends without any taste of life. This movie focuses on collecting thoughts and situations of discarded people's lives. These people live surrounded by discarded things in a "Scarry house" near the junkyard. They themselves have chosen the most important moments of their lives through which they would like to go for it again. They perform these in the movie to each other. They play through their memories.

Evaluation of the jury:

A documentary combining elements of reality and fiction. The authenticity of characters and the relationship based on trust between the filmmaker and the actors result in an exciting cinematographic adventure.
